The primary role of the Master of Science in Accountancy is to prepare students for careers in public accounting as Certified Public Accountants. The program focuses on the audit and attest functions of public accounting.

Application Deadlines

Fall Semester:
February 15 for fall Graduate Assistantships
June 1 for all other students

Summer Session:
March 1

Spring Semester:
October 1 for both admission and Graduate Assistantships


Graduate Assistantships are available on a limited basis.  The GA waives all tuition and fees and pays a stipend of approximately $9,000 for the academic year, and requires 20 hours of work per week throughout the semester. Contracts are not automatically renewed, but students may apply for a second year.

Admission Requirements

  1. Apply to the Graduate College and satisfy the minimum admissions requirements of the Graduate College. International applicants must satisfy the international admissions requirements.
  2. A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution of higher learning or a degree from a non-U.S. institution of higher education that is judged equivalent to a U.S. baccalaureate degree by the International Admissions Office.
  3.  An undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better.
  4. An essay on one of the three topics:
    a.) Discuss your career goals, both short-term and long-term.  How will Boise State’s MSAT program help you achieve these goals?
    b.) Discuss 2 or 3 situations in the past 3 years where you have taken a leadership role. How do these events demonstrate your managerial potential?
    c.) Please give a brief, candid evaluation of yourself.  Include a discussion of your strengths and weaknesses. What do you consider most unique or distinctive about yourself?
  5. A current and detailed resume highlighting two or more years of professional work. Indicate full or part time and include start and end dates, including the month and year of each position held.
  6. Official GMAT scores OR hold a current CPA, CIA or CMA license.
  7. Three references (a person who has been your direct supervisor in a professional setting or your professor in an academic setting). Include name, title, phone number, email address, and reason why this person is a reference.

You do not need to submit an essay or a GMAT/GRE score if you meet at last one of the following criteria:

  • 3.3 or higher GPA in all upper-division accounting courses (including the required 18 credits of upper-division accounting courses) AND 3.3 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Currently licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)
  • Earned an advanced degree from a regionally accredited institution (Master’s or Doctorate) in any discipline
